Do you ever feel the weight of life? Sometimes, despite our best intentions to rest and maintain a good work-life balance, the day-to-day can feel heavy.
It’s not that anything horrible has happened, but the pressure to keep all the balls in the air feels overwhelming.
We all have the normal stresses of life. Pressures with children and family, parents getting older, work stress, financial stress, and issues with health or various other things that can occur. Sometimes it feels like these things wear you down, and it’s one demand after another.
I Don’t Want To Run Away From My Life
I don’t want to live a life where I have to run away from it. Every time I feel this way, I also feel like it’s all up to me. The plates are all spinning in the air, but they aren’t just mine. I am also trying to control the things my husband is responsible for (he didn’t ask me to do that) and trying to manage my older kids in an unhealthy way. I make unwise decisions at work trying to put out fires that don’t exist in my effort to control everything.
Funnily enough the more I try to control my world, the more out of control it feels. The tighter I grip, the more things seem to fall into a hole. I am not the nicest person in the world when I am trying to control everyone and everything.
Something else I have noticed when I fall into this pattern is that I often neglect my time with God. Spending time with God isn’t just something to tick off the list, another item on a list of priorities. When I make time for God in the morning, I am reminding myself that I don’t have to control it all. I don’t even have to carry life’s burdens. When I prioritise time with God, I am handing control to Him and reminding myself that I can trust Him.
Matthew 11:28-30 is one of my favourite passages in the Bible.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
An Amazing Invitation
What an incredible invitation to walk with Jesus. We find true rest when we bring our tired, weary selves to Him. In verse 29, it says to learn from him because he is gentle and humble of heart. I think it’s just a beautiful reminder for us that we can continue that relationship with Him. We can learn from Him, and he is gentle with us as we come to him again and again.
If you are finding yourself struggling with the heaviness of life, try writing Matthew 11:28-30 on a card and sticking it on your mirror so you see it every morning. It’s when we let go of tightly held control that we can truly rest.
