David Smyth shares top tips for exploring Chile’s deserts, glaciers, and vineyards—plus why this diverse South American gem is a must-see.

By: Bec Harris

“Chile has everything,” says travel expert David Smyth from Forward Travel.

Stretching from the world’s driest desert to the icy peaks of Patagonia, Chile offers an unmatched range of landscapes. Smyth explains, “It’s a really long, thin country that runs down the west coast of South America, almost as long as Australia is wide.”

That means travellers can experience deserts, snow-capped mountains, vineyards, beaches, and glaciers all in one country.

Top Three Must-See Regions

When asked where to go first, Smyth doesn’t hesitate. “You’ve got to do the Atacama Desert up north, spend time around Santiago in the wine region, and then head down south to Patagonia.”

Each region shows off Chile’s diversity, from surreal salt flats and flamingo-filled lagoons to world-class wineries and stunning fjords.

If you’re looking for something less touristy, David recommends driving the Carretera Austral. “It’s often overlooked because it’s off the beaten track, but it’s spectacular,” he says. “You can take it at your own pace and see some of the most amazing scenery in the country.”

Getting There Is Easier Than You Think

Many travellers don’t realise you can fly directly from Australia to Chile. “Latam and Qantas both operate flights,” David explains. “It’s about a 14-hour trip from Sydney to Santiago.”

From there, you can explore the rest of South America or stay to enjoy Chile’s unique mix of nature, food, and culture.

A Food Lover’s Paradise

Chile’s cuisine reflects its geography. “It’s a big meat country,” Smyth says. “You’ll find hearty dishes with beans, corn, and vegetables.”

Seafood is also a highlight thanks to Chile’s long coastline. “You won’t be disappointed,” he adds. “And don’t forget to try Chile’s famous wines or a pisco sour if you like cocktails.”

Planning Your Chilean Adventure

Chile’s length means climates vary drastically. Smyth advises travellers to plan around the seasons. “You can’t visit Patagonia in March or April it’s too cold. Decide what you want to see, because you probably can’t do it all in one trip.”

He also suggests flying between regions to save time. “It’s a safe, well-structured country, but distances are big a bit like Australia.”

Why Chile Should Be on Your List

From desert dunes to glacier lakes, Chile promises adventure for every kind of traveller. “It’s one of those places that just has everything,” David says.

Whether you’re sipping wine in Santiago, hiking in Patagonia, or stargazing in the Atacama, Chile delivers unforgettable experiences and it’s now easier than ever to get there.

Close, affordable, unforgettable experiences, adventure, culture, and relaxation, Sri Lanka belongs on your bucket list

By: Bec Harris

“Look, for a little small country it packs a punch.” David Smyth, from Forward Travel, describes Sri Lanka as a destination full of surprises. Many travellers see it as India’s quieter cousin. Yet, Sri Lanka offers a completely unique experience.

From golden beaches to wildlife safaris, rolling tea plantations, and ancient history, Sri Lanka offers a diverse range of experiences in every corner.

Easy to Explore and Relax

Sri Lanka is compact, which means less rushing. “You can experience a beach day, a safari, and rolling hills all within close proximity,” David explains. Travellers can slow down, soak up the scenery, and still fit in multiple adventures.

A safari in a national park, tea tasting in the hills, or climbing Sigiriya Rock Fortress, all are within reach in just a short drive.

Culture and Language

While its neighbour India is often associated with Hinduism, Sri Lanka is rooted in Buddhism with layers of Hindu, Islamic, and Christian influence. “For the size of the country, it’s really got everything,” David notes.

English is widely spoken, making it easy for travelers to communicate. Still, learning a local greeting goes a long way.

Flavours That Stay With You

David lights up when he talks about the food. “You can’t beat Sri Lankan curry,” he says. Each dish bursts with spice, coconut milk, and tradition passed down for generations.

Rice and curry form the heart of the cuisine, but seafood lovers will also be delighted. “Every bite is like this little explosion of flavors in your mouth,” David adds.

How Long to Stay and What It Costs

For a good balance, David recommends “anywhere between seven and ten days.” This timeframe allows you to enjoy Sri Lanka without feeling rushed.

As for budget, a ten-day trip can cost between $3,000–$4,000, depending on accommodation. Options range from homestays and renovated colonial lodges to luxury resorts.

Getting There

Flights from Australia take about ten hours, with direct options from Melbourne. Many airlines also allow stopovers in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur for added adventure.

Sri Lanka is close, affordable, and filled with unforgettable experiences. If you want a destination that blends adventure, culture, food, and relaxation, Sri Lanka belongs on your bucket list.

Discover Uganda’s gorilla trekking, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality—why this hidden gem belongs on your travel bucket list.

By: Bec Harris

Uganda may not be the first country that comes to mind when you think of Africa, but it should be. David Smyth recently returned from exploring East Africa and shares why Uganda stood out.

An Authentic African Experience

“Uganda is something special,” David said. “It’s still off the beaten track. It feels real.”

Unlike some of its neighbours, Uganda hasn’t been overrun by commercial tourism. Markets line the roadside, and the scenery is breath-taking. Most of all, the people are warm and welcoming.

Trekking With Gorillas

One of the biggest drawcards is Gorilla Trekking.

“It is spectacular in a nutshell,” David explained. “You definitely need a reasonable level of fitness.”

The trek takes you through thick jungle and humid conditions. But the reward is unforgettable, standing face-to-face with a Silverback Gorilla.

“When you see him looking back at you, it’s everything you dreamed of,” David said. “It’s a privilege to share their space.”

Chimpanzees and Wildlife Encounters

Uganda also offers the chance to see chimpanzees.

“The energy was incredible,” David recalled. “They’re fast, climbing in and out of trees. It was pure wild.”

And it doesn’t stop there. Expect elephants, hippos, lions, and even cheeky warthogs.

“To have a bull elephant walk beside you silently, it blows you away,” David shared.

Culture, Food, and Community

Uganda’s culture is just as memorable as its wildlife. Local markets are filled with fresh produce, meats, and street food.

“The fruit is so tasty, so juicy,” David said. “Everything comes straight from the farm.”

He also loved trying the local favourite, a “Rolex” an omelette rolled in a chapati.

“You’re helping families when you buy from roadside stalls,” he added. “It makes a huge difference in their community.”

Planning Your Trip

A journey to Uganda isn’t cheap, but it’s worth it. Flights from Australia average around $2,500. A 10-day package, including gorilla permits, costs about $6,000–$10,000 per person.

“Permits for gorillas are $750 USD alone,” David explained. “That’s why booking six to eight months in advance is essential.”

Travellers also need a yellow fever certificate to enter Uganda.

Choosing the Right Guide

David stressed the importance of booking with the right company.

“You want someone who’s responsible and passionate,” he said. “It’s not just about driving from hotel to hotel. It’s the in-between moments where you really experience the country.”

A Destination Worth Adding

Uganda offers unforgettable wildlife encounters, vibrant culture, and genuine hospitality. “If Uganda’s not on your bucket list, it should be,” David concluded.
